Cotton highlights: the gentle highlighting technique few salons still practise

Ask for highlights today and you will usually have aluminium foil placed in your hair. Yet an older, finer technique uses no foil at all: cotton highlights. Rarely included in training today, it takes considerably more time but produces a different result. What exactly are cotton highlights?

With cotton highlights, strands coated in lightener are wrapped in cotton rather than aluminium foil. The result is many very fine highlights that blend softly rather than ending abruptly: lightness without a harsh edge or a visible root line during regrowth.

Replacing foil may sound like a detail, but it changes the process. Aluminium foil retains body heat, making lightening faster and more even, with clearer contrast against the rest of the hair. Cotton lets air reach the hair, slowing lightening and keeping it visible for finer control. This control is why the technique is considered gentle — and why it takes time.

How does a cotton-highlights appointment work?

There are five stages: colour analysis, consultation with a fixed price, sectioning and application, controlled processing without retained heat, and gloss and finish. Here is how it works in the salon:

   First comes assessment, not colour. Starting tone, texture and previous colour treatments determine how much your hair can be lightened and how densely highlights can be placed.

3. 3.Sectioning and application

   Very fine strands are sectioned, coated with lightener and individually wrapped in cotton. Placement at the parting, hairline and through the fall of the hair determines whether the result looks natural.

4. 4.Processing without retained heat

   This is the core of the technique: cotton lets air reach the hair, so lightening works more slowly and stays visible. The hairdresser controls the blend rather than relying on heat retained by foil.

5. 5.Gloss and finish

   A final gloss balances the tone and adds shine. A cut and blow-dry follow according to your booked service.

Who are cotton highlights for?

Cotton highlights suit anyone wanting natural lightness without a clear root line after six weeks. They are especially suitable for:

• Fine to medium hair that should look naturally lighter rather than visibly highlighted.
• Anyone who does not want root touch-ups every few weeks.
• Previously coloured hair — the starting colour is assessed first.
• Anyone who has left a salon with highlights that felt too obvious or streaky.

The technique is less suitable for deliberately strong contrast, such as clearly defined light strands in dark hair. Foil highlights remain a better choice for that distinct separation.

How do cotton highlights differ from foil highlights and balayage?

Why do only a few salons still practise this technique?

Two reasons: time and experience. Cotton highlights take longer because every strand is wrapped individually, which is difficult to fit into a tightly scheduled salon day. They also require a trained eye for assessing lightening without retained heat — something that cannot be learned from a textbook alone.

How long does treatment take, and what does it cost at Valesca Hair?

Cotton highlights at Valesca Hair are priced after consultation, with a binding fixed price before treatment rather than a surprise at the till. The number of strands and processing time depend on hair length, density and starting colour. A flat rate would be too high for some clients and too low for others.
